Cute Craft Alert: How to Make a Paper Clip Heart

The other day I saw someone make a heart out of a paper clip while fiddling with the paper clip that came off their papers. It jogged my memory of making them when I was a kid (a little while ago)!

This craft is so simple that it only takes one supply item and a few seconds to make! The kids may make every single paper clip in your house into a heart after they learn to make this craft!

Supplies for Heart Paper Clips

You only need one supply to bring these cute heart shaped paper clips to life!

  • Paper clips- Large paper clips or small or medium paper clips in colors work for this craft. So do pastel paper clips, silver paper clips or gold paper clips.

How to Make a Heart Paperclip Step-by-Step

Lay the paper clip on the work surface in front of you with the larger end to the right and the end of the wire to the top. Pick up the paper clip in your left hand, holding it securely in the center.

Take the right-hand larger end between the fingers of your right hand. Bend this end towards you and upwards, making a 90-degree angle. Note: The opening end of the wire is to the back of the clip.

Take the same end of the paper clip twisting it back and upwards. The clip will still be at a 90-degree angle.

Work at bending the clip so it has the heart shape you like. And that's how to make a heart with paper clip!

Now slip the heart paper clips onto your Valentine's cards. Learn how to stitch Valentines cards (like the ones in these photos) using a free printable!

Craft Tips

Check out these tips on how to make a heart out of a paper clip:

  • Large paper clips- Start with a large paper clip when learning to make hearts.
  • To see the full heart shape- Slip the heart paper clip onto the top of your card or paper. Leave the two top humps of the heart away from the edge of the paper a bit so you can see the full heart shape.
  • Heart bling- Use the heart paper clips to decorate a card or journal. Attach a gift card or note to a Valentine’s card with a paper clip heart.

Craft Variations

Here are a few variations you’re welcome to try with this heart paper clip craft:

  • Gold paper clips- Try finding gold paper clips for fun, but any color paper clip works.
  • Left handed people- You can reverse the directions and hold the clip with your right hand, making the wire bends with your left hand.
  • Bending the clip- A second way to make a heart shaped paper clip is to just bend the paper clip in half, shaping it if needed. See which method you like the best. The video shows this method too.
