Are you ready for a fun Halloween craft for kids? This woven web is simple to make with just a few craft items!
I take our dog for a walk in the mornings when it’s cool and there is dew on the grass. The dew makes it possible to see spider webs on the trees and bushes, they just sparkle in the sunlight!
Spider webs have intriguing construction and they were the inspiration for this tutorial. Let’s jump in and weave our own craft spider web!
Craft Supplies
You don’t need many supplies to bring this spider web with yarn and spider to life!
- Frame- Purchase an 8x10” or larger frame from a store or thrift store (no glass needed).
- Acrylic paints- The only acrylic paint color needed is black craft paint.
- Yarn- Use white yarn for the spider web.
- Styrofoam ball- A 1 ½’ Styrofoam ball is the body of the spider.
- Pipe cleaners- 2 black pipe cleaners for spider legs.
- Googly eyes- 2 googly eyes for the spider eyes
Steps to Make a Spider Web Craft with Yarn
Use acrylic craft paint to paint the entire frame black if you did not purchase a black frame to begin with!
Set the frame aside to dry. You'll need the black craft paint again a bit later, so set it to the side as well.
Create the base of the spiderweb.
Tie eight pieces of white yarn from side to side, vertically, and diagonally on the frame. Tie each piece of yarn on the frame separately and have them cross all in one place. That is the center of the spider web.
Weaving a spider web
Cut a piece of white yarn that is about 12 feet long.
Use this yarn to tie the eight yarns together where they cross. Then, begin to weave in a circle around this point. Tie the weaving yarn to the base yarns to create the spider web look.
Continue weaving in larger circles until you get to the frame, then tie off the weaving yarn and clip the end.
Creating the spider
Paint the Styrofoam ball black with the black paint. Set it aside to dry.
Cut each of the two black pipe cleaners into four pieces for spider legs. Bend each pipe-cleaner leg in half. Stick four legs into each side of the spider’s body (the Styrofoam ball).
Glue on two googly eyes to your spider craft.
Slip the cute spider onto the web and bend a couple legs down to “hold onto” the spider web.
Hang up your spider web and spider for a Halloween spider web decoration.
Tips for This Spider Craft for Kids
- Frame- Check the thrift store for a frame, especially if you are making this project with a group and need several.
- Frame color- Obviously, you can skip the frame painting step if you purchase a black frame.
- Yarn weaving- Tie the weaving string to the base yard, don't just wrap the yarn.
- Yarns crossing- It looks nice to have the 8 yarns crossing slightly off-center, not in the center of the frame.
- Painting the ball- Stick a toothpick or corsage pin in the Styrofoam ball so you can paint the entire ball black.
Craft Variations
Want to switch things up? Here are a few ways you can customize and play with this craft.
- Frame size- Use a larger frame and make a large web to hang up for Halloween.
- Use outdoors- This would look great on a front porch (larger size) or hanging from a tree.
- No frame- Use a paper plate with the center cut out (for a paper plate spider web craft). Or cut a large cardboard square frame if you don’t have a regular picture frame for this project.
- Plastic spider- Purchase a plastic spider instead of making a spider from the Styrofoam ball.
FAQ
Yes, you could make a cardboard frame, use a plate with the center cut out, or tie the yarns to other objects in your house or on your porch.
