Cute Craft Alert: DIY Comic Strips Template

Don’t you love it when kids tell stories? They have such great imaginations. Blank comic strips give them a place to capture that imagination where it can be shared in a fun way.

Copy these comic templates and help them bring their stories to life. They can write down dialogue in comment and thought bubbles as well as draw their own characters.

I used comic templates with a number of assignments as I was teaching and plan to share this with the grandkids the next time they come over. The free blank comic strip options from the free printable will let each person find what they want to fit their comic stories.

Bring Your Stories to Life With A Comic Template!

This comic template is such a simple way to start your creative story project. You and the kids don’t have to worry about drawing your own blank comic strips. These templates provide boxes and layouts so you can jump right into storytelling.

Each comic panel template gives them clear spaces to draw characters, scenes, and add speech bubbles. Help the kids build a beginning, middle, and end to the story, fitting into the blank panels of the comic strip.. It’s perfect for encouraging writing skills, creativity, and even a little humor!

Comic Panel Template Inspiration

Need a few ideas to get started? Here are some fun prompts for your comic strips template:

  • A superhero saves the day… but something goes hilariously wrong
  • A pet goes on a secret adventure while the family is away
  • A day in the life of your favorite toy
  • A silly conversation between two animals
  • A “what if” story- what if kids ruled the world?
  • A funny school day moment

If your kids need a jump start, let them take one of these ideas and go with it! They will tell an epic tale from a prompt or their own idea!

This creative project can help them learn how to tell a story well, to understand how to make it flow. It can help them focus on the core points and let go of unnecessary details. And it can be used in educational settings as well as at home to make a project fun in history, science, or language. I even used it in my home-ec classes!

  4. Add the thought or speech bubbles and write in what you want to say.
  5. Use a thin lined permanent black marker to go over each panel drawing after you have everything the way you want it.
  6. Color in the drawings (if you want to) with colored pencils, markers, or crayons.

Craft Tips- For Comics Success

These tips can help making your comic strips even easier!

  • Use card stock paper to make your project more sturdy and have less bleed through if using markers.
  • Divide your story into steps or parts and make an outline before starting. This makes it easier to know how many frames you want in the template as well as how to fill in the template
  • Put paper underneath the comic strip template to keep the marker from soaking through.
  • Draw first in pencil so you can make changes easily.
  • When blacklining your drawings use a permanent marker so it won’t smudge, especially if you’re using water based markers to color them in.
  • Draw simple pictures, and remember, stick figures can work well.
  • You may want to try putting the words into the blank comic panels first and draw the picture around it to make sure there is room for both.

Craft Variations- To Try For Comic Fun!

Here are a few variations you’re welcome to try with this comic template craft:

  • Make your own comic strip template and decorate it as you wish.
  • With a black marker, round off the corners of the template inside each square. Makes a more rounded look to the template.
  • Make your comic without words telling the story with pictures only
  • Use stickers instead of making drawings of characters
  • Make this a family project and have each person draw a panel so the story unrolls as you go!
  • Make your own comic book by stapling several pages together
