Cute Craft Alert: A Personalized Card Idea

When I was in college, we made these magazine collage cards all the time! I still have some of them. We would make a homemade card for a friend and personalize it with words and pictures that reminded us of that friend.

When I received one of these cards, it always touched me because of the collage of words that people would choose to describe me. I think you will find the person who receives your card will feel the same way.

Plus, it's an inexpensive homemade card idea. Isn't that a win-win? Personalized and special but less expensive.

Plus another win is that it's from recycled materials. A magazine collage card is a great way to use old magazines. So this would be a great personalized Father's Day Card Idea (or for any occasion!).

Paper, magazine pages, glue and scissors- all you need to make a collage card for Father's Day!

Supplies

You don’t need many supplies to bring this magazine collage art to life!

  • Card stock paper – Use white cardstock or colored card stock paper to make your card because it has a nice weight to the paper.
  • Old magazines- This is a great way to recycle old magazines you may have. If you don't have magazines to use you could ask a friend.
  • Glue stick – I prefer using a glue stick over liquid glue, but if what you have a school glue that will work OK.
  • Permanent marker- Write a message in the card with a permanent marker.
  • Scissors – of course to cut your words out of the magazine. You will need a good scissors.

Step-by-Step Collage Using Magazines

Making this word collage card is fast and easy and makes a gift so personal! If you want to watch the full length tutorial video here is the link: Kind Words Collage Card Full Length Video.

Prepare your card

If you have an envelope that you want to use, cut your card to the size that will fit into that envelope. Remember you want your card to open, so fold the cardstock paper in half and then cut it to the envelope size. I used a whole 8.5x11 inch piece of colored cardstock folded in half for my card.

Cut the magazines

Thumb through your magazines and cut out pictures and words that remind you of the person that you are making the card for. If you cannot find the words that you want, cut out the letters and piece them together to make the words in a collage!

Write a message

Take the time to write a message with a permanent marker before you glue on the magazine pictures and words. I chose to write a message inside the card.

Glue the collage

There are many ways to put together a cut out word card.

If you have larger pictures, use a glue stick to put these on the card first. You will notice that I covered the entire surface of the front of my card with pictures before gluing on the words. This is optional, but large pictures will cover up your words if you glue the words on first.

Craft Tips

These tips make it even easier to create word collage!

  • Cardstock- Cardstock paper is a good weight for making a card.
  • Card size- A whole shevet of paper folded in half makes a nice sized card for this purpose.
  • Fit word size to card size- Look at the size of your card and keep that size in mind as you cut out the words and letters. You have a limited amount of space so they can't be too large.
  • Kind of glue- Glue sticks work better than a liquid glue as the paper doesn't wrinkle as much.
  • Gluing- Glue on the larger pieces first so you know that you have room for the smaller ones.
  • Personal Theme- Match the words and pictures to the interests of the person the card is for. You will create a "word cloud" that the person will find inspiring.
  • Envelope- Make your own envelope with the help of the How to Make an Envelope 3 Ways post.

Craft Variations

Want to switch things up? Here are a few ways you can customize and play with this collage magazine craft.

  • Background- Cover the entire surface of your card with magazine images first. This gives a background for the words and more color to the card.
  • Paper color- Use different colors of card stock paper.
  • Cut out word picture- Make a picture on a canvas or piece of cardstock and frame it.
  • Text collage- Only use words, put them together like a crossword puzzle, make a design from the words, etc.
  • Any occasion- Use this magazine collage card idea for a birthday, Mother's Day, Christmas, or any occasion!

FAQ

Where to get magazines for collages?

If you don’t subscribe to magazines yourself ask friends or the local library for old copies of their magazines. People are usually looking for ways to share or recycle them.

Best magazines for collages?

The best magazines for collages are in the same theme that you want for your craft. Look for magazines with heavier weight pages and lots of colored picture and useable words and letters to cut out.

What are some collage tips?

Lay out your design before gluing it on so you like the overall look. Place the larger items on the card first. Then glue the smaller items on top so they don’t get covered up. Glue sticks seem to work better on magazine paper than a liquid glue (less wrinkles).
