Who was St Patrick?
St. Patrick was a real person that lived during the 5th century and his life story is amazing.
At the age of 16, Patrick was taken prisoner by Irish pirates. They brought him to Ireland from his home in Britain. There he was a slave and served as a shepherd for 6 years. He escaped and returned to his home in Britain where he studied in the church.
After some time Patrick returned to Ireland as a missionary. Legend has it that the shamrock is special in Ireland because St. Patrick used it to teach about faith.
Can you imagine all that he experienced? He sounds amazing. Look for more information about St. Patrick online.

Steps to Make a Felt Shamrock
Make a felt shamrock
Shamrocks have three leaves shaped like hearts. You'll see more of them represented in this cute St. Patrick's Day coloring page too.
Cut 3 squares of green felt that are approximately 2 inches by two inches in size. Fold the square in half and cut out a heart. These do not need to be perfect.
You can use the free Shamrock template if you prefer drawing around the shamrock outline to cut out the leaves.
Put a small amount of hot glue in the pointed end of the heart and press it together so it gives it a 3D shape
Clip off the tip of the heart so that the three leaves can fit more closely together.
Glue the three leaves together, two at a time, with a small dot of hot glue on the edge close to the point.

Creating the shamrock stem
Cut out a small piece of felt the same size as your button and glue it to the back of the button. Try to keep the holes from being covered up with glue
Make a hole through the felt to open up two of the button holes. Use the point of your scissor, that worked well for me.
Thread the two ends of your floral wire down through those two holes in the button. Start at the front of the button and go down through the felt to the back of the button. Twist the wire together for the stem.
Glue the button to the back of the 3 leaved felt Shamrock.
Make several of these and put them together for a bouquet in a small vase.
If you make a single Shamrock for a pin, you can add a small rectangle shaped piece of felt as the stem. Just glue it onto the back of the Shamrock.

How to make a shamrock flower (optional)
The free printable has a pattern for a shamrock flower. Or freehand cut a five-leaf white or pink flower from white felt (as seen in the pictures and video).
Thread the wire through the hole of the bead and fold in half.
Poke the wires through the center of the felt shamrock flower.
Twist the wires to make a stem. Place the flower in among the shamrocks.

Craft Tips
- Large button holes- Make sure that the holes in the buttons are large enough to get your wire or pipe cleaner through. The buttons do not need to be large.
- Felt heart shapes- Shamrock leaves are not perfect in shape so remember, your hearts do not need to be perfectly shaped either. It gives the Shamrock character.
- Clipping points- When clipping the points of the shamrocks, don’t clip off all the glued part or it won’t stay in a 3-D shape.

Craft Variations
Want to switch things up? Here are a few ways you can customize and play with this felt shamrock craft.
- Felt four leaf clovers- Technically shamrocks are not 4 leaf clovers, but you can make a four leafed shamrock just for fun!
- Felt shamrock pin- Make one Shamrock and glue it to a latch pin. I glued on a small rectangle shaped stem and beads to the shamrock to liven it up.
- Felt shamrock barrette- Make one or two shamrocks and glue or stitch them onto a barrette to wear in your hair.
- Felt shamrock garland- Make a series of shamrocks (you could make them larger, the free shamrock template would work well) and glue them onto a ribbon for a garland. Paper shamrocks would work on a garland as well.
- Leftover felt scraps- If you've got extra felt scraps floating around after this craft, use them for more felt crafts! Try out these fun felt flowers that use green for their leaves.

FAQ
Yes! The free shamrock printable contains a simple shamrock outline shape to trace around for this St Patrick's Day craft project. Check out craft steps to find the link for the free printable.
A shamrock has three leaves. A shamrock is a type of clover but is not the same as a four-leaf clover. The four-leaf clover is a mutation from a three-leaf clover and isn’t common. The four-leaf clover is more rare so it is thought to be lucky. You can also grow a shamrock plant- check it out online!
