Torn Paper Mosaic Art is over the top simple and fun to make!! I’m loving this project!! Can I please do this as a full time job???
Nana's Favorite!
Seriously, this is the easiest craft we have done in some time and the grands all loved it! It works for any age, even for adults!! Torn Paper Mosaic Art is going on the list of “Nana’s Favorites”.
Don't you love mosaic?
Over the years I’ve always been intrigued with mosaic artwork. You can see it in ancient buildings in Rome, in modern airports and in friend’s homes.
Mosaic inspires many artists and many craft projects. The Concrete Stepping Stone Project done earlier on WTNs was inspired by mosaic.
An artist friend of mine works primarily with Torn Paper Mosaic Art and I have two of her pieces in my home. They are beautiful and I showed them to the grands which helped inspire this WTN project!
You've got this!
The supplies for Torn Paper Mosaic Art are easy to have on hand. Paper, glue and a surface to cover! Warning, you may go wild with this project and cover all sorts of things around the house!!
The Ultimate Recycling
Our grands were home last weekend and we had an impromptu art time. “Nana, can we make a craft?” I didn’t need to be asked twice!
The kids covered the craft table with some newspaper while I scavenged a variety of types of papers for them to use. Scrapbooking paper, construction paper and a few magazines went on the center of the table along with glue and some pencils.
Cover it in paper
I had some 8x10” canvases in my stash for them to use as their base. You can use any size canvas or you can use some card stock, a small box, or pieces of wood as your base.
It worked well to draw a picture on the canvas for the main design of the picture. This gave the kids some direction when choosing colors of paper.
Colored paper
They thumbed through the magazines and found pictures with the colors they needed for certain areas of their drawing.
It took a bit of coaching to help them understand how to tear out these areas of color and then tear them into pieces to glue on their canvas. At first they wanted to cover a large area of sky with one big piece of magazine picture.
Tear it up!
Once they caught the vision they were tearing a variety of papers up into pieces and mixing the various blue pieces or green pieces to fill in and cover an area.
It doesn’t matter if there is some lettering on the paper, this just adds interest to the picture.
I kept the extra torn up pieces and will start a paper file to use when we do this type of project again. My eye has been drawn to papers of all sorts after this Torn Paper Mosaic Art project. We could use paper from maps, candy wrappers, stamps, and napkins for example. This is the ultimate recycling.
Glue the paper on
At first we squirted the glue directly onto the canvas and spread it over an area before pressing on the torn paper pieces.
Once the canvas was fairly well covered, the grands went back and covered any bits of white canvas still peeking through. They got more ideas as they went along and added bits of paper to look like clouds in the sky or flowers in their grassy areas.
It's a finished mosaic
After a while they were happy with their creations and wanted to head to the park.
The canvases dried while we were gone and I chose to paint over them with a clear acrylic to seal down some of the loose edges and give a little protection to the surface.
Like, yes...so colorful
Didn’t these Torn Paper Mosaic Art pieces turn out so colorful and whimsical?
I can’t wait to see some pictures of what your grands make!
Mosaic Meme
Recently there was a meme on social media that pointed out that a mosaic is a beautiful work of art even though it is made from broken pieces. I loved how the meme went on to say how that is true of each of us as well.
You're a work of art!
In the precious moments we have together, let’s tell our grands that their lives are a beautiful work of art, even if everything isn’t perfect. Perhaps we all need reminded of that.
Life is a mosaic...
How have the pieces of your life fit together like a mosaic? Take a moment to ponder that possibility. You are a beautiful work of art as well, fellow Nanas! I celebrate you and love that you want to connect with your grands.
