DIY Button Art On Canvas

Pictures made out of buttons

DIY Button Art On Canvas features pictures made out of buttons. This craft is fast to set up, simple to make and a sinch to clean up. If you need a craft to take with you when you visit the grandkids or for a kid’s birthday party this is just the ticket.

Most craft supply stores have large bags of buttons that are perfect for this project. I love the packs with bright colors and a variety of shapes and sizes.

Allow the kids to draw a design on their canvas in pencil. It should be a large and fairly simple design, so it is easy to fill in the space with the buttons. The butterfly design worked really well for example.

Tip: It works well to draw the design on a piece of paper first. Then they will get their idea in mind before starting on the canvas. This lessens the need to erase lines on the canvas that don’t fully erase and gives you an opportunity to encourage them to make the design larger. BUT, most kids don’t want to draw things twice so there’s that.

Go over the drawing with black permanent marker.

For a birthday party it would be easy to trace a starter picture on each canvas in the birthday party theme. That would make the craft even more simple to create in a limited time frame.

How do I make a button picture?

Pour the buttons onto a sheet cake pan (cookie sheet with sides). This allows the kids to hunt through the buttons and choose the ones they want to use. It also keeps the buttons from rolling off onto the floor! Some kids like to have buttons that coordinate or are symmetrical (the same on both sides of the picture). Others are random. It’s so much fun to watch what and how they choose.

The kids will use craft glue (like Elmer’s) to attach the buttons to the canvas. Cover the area inside the drawing as much as possible to add color and interest. The buttons can even be layered somewhat if desired.

That’s it! Just let the glue dry and it is ready to display.  I told you it was easy!

Handmade button craft projects

OK, so I’ll say it, I think adults would like to do this craft as much as the kids. I have several ideas in mind for using up some vintage buttons that are sitting in my craft stash. Seems that there are more posts coming…some for adults!

Enjoy!
