Cute Craft Alert: Story behind the page
I was in Girl Scouts and remember taking part in a tree planting for Arbor Day back in sixth grade! My friend Natalie and I got our picture in the newspaper. That was so exciting and it put the idea of tree planting on my radar.
My mother planted trees and bushes around our farm every year. She had to because my siblings and I regularly accidentally mowed them over. We had a lovely farm yard as a result.
I’ve heard it said that “The best time to plant a tree is yesterday. The second best time is today!” We can’t plant full grown trees but we can start trees and enjoy watching them grow.
Enjoy this hand drawn Arbor day coloring page and consider planting a tree!

History of Arbor Day
I didn't know a lot about the history of Arbor Day so I thought I'd bring us both up to speed.
As settlers were moving west in what is now the United States they settled in prairie areas where there weren't many trees. The people missed the trees they left behind and more importantly they missed the benefits of having trees.
Trees provide shade and beauty of course, but they help in other important ways. Trees provide materials for building and wood to burn for heat and cooking. They also act as a windbreak. When you are in an open area that can keep the dirt from blowing.
So in January of 1892, J. Sterling Morton suggested a tree planting day. April 10th was the date chosen in the Nebraska Territory. The county that planted the most trees properly got a prize. The people planted a million trees that day!
Arbor Day is now a national holiday set on the last Friday of April. But many states have the date set so that it fits better with their growing season.
