I'll be gnome for Christmas...
Kids and adults alike will love to make a no sew sock gnome for Christmas. How can you NOT love this face (or what you can see of this face that is)?
A gnome by any other name...?
Gnomes are so popular right now. But they have been around for a long time, sometimes by another name.
The Swedish tomte-
About (cough) years ago as a girl, I received this little wooden figurine from my aunt. She had traveled to Sweden (we are of Swedish descent) and brought me this tomte.
In Swedish folk lore, every farmyard has a tomte that makes sure that the animals are well tended. If they are, the tomte is helpful and kind. If not, the tomte can be mischievous.
I saw felt tomtes that looked like our sock gnomes when I finally got to travel to Sweden myself. I’m glad to call them gnomes…but in my heart they will always be tomtes!
Simple to make Christmas sock gnomes
You won’t believe how simple these Christmas sock gnomes are to make. The only hang up is that they are hot glued in several places and so I recommend you help younger children when making them.
Choose your Christmas socks
The Make a No Sew Sock Gnome for Christmas is made from two decorative Christmas designed socks, a bit of craft fur and a tube or crew sock. Inside is rice and a hand full of fiberfill stuffing. The supply list gives the other extra items needed.
The fuzzy socks worked very well for these and are easy to find in the discount stores. Two different socks make the cutest gnomes.
Ready, set, gnome!
OK. Ready to Make a No Sew Sock Gnome for Christmas??? Let’s do it!!
Fill with rice
First, fill the little gnome belly with rice by putting two cups of dry uncooked rice in the crew sock. It works really well to pour the rice in a cup, put the top of the sock around the lip of the glass and then turn the glass upside down. The rice easily slips down into the sock.
Kind of tap the bottom of the sock down onto the table top to settle the rice. Then wrap a small rubber band around the sock, right above the rice level.
Tie a string tightly around this same area, tying it off well. This will be covered later.
If using a crew sock with a heal, turn that to the back of the gnome.
Make a gnome nose
About ⅔ of the way up the rice filled sock, grab a quarter to ½ dollar sized area of sock and a chunk of rice. Twist a rubber band around this area to form a “nose”. This takes a bit of persistence as the rice seems to slip back out when trying to put on the rubber band, but keep trying! When done, tie a string tightly over the rubber band to secure the nose.
Tip: The rubber band is much easier to use first but alone it will give way after a short amount of time. You will lose your gnome nose without the string!!
Use the brush for the powder blush and give the nose a nice pink color. This gnome has been out in the cold!
Dress your gnome
Cut one of the decorative Christmas socks right under the heel.
Pull this sock over the rice filled crew sock. The sock will pull up and tuck right under the gnome nose and up higher on the back. Lift the edge of the sock and place a line of glue all around the edge of this sock to keep it in place. Be very careful with this as that glue can soak through the sock or squish out from the edge and burn your fingers.
How about a beard
Draw a horse shoe shape from the craft fur, leaving one edge straight. Cut on the line you have drawn.
Tip: Cut the piece of craft fur from the fabric side, just through the fabric and not all the way through the fur/hair side. Cutting through both layers trims off the bottom of the beard hair!!
Cut a small dip in the center of the straight edge to make way for the gnome nose to fit.
Try this on the gnome and see if you like the way it fits. If not, trim a bit more off if needed.
Glue the beard right under the nose of the gnome. Oh my, this is already so cute!
Hats off on for our gnome!
To make the hat more full and stand up, stuff a hand full of fiberfill in the upper part of the crew sock. You can put a rubber band around the top but this will be inside the hat so it doesn’t need to be tied with string.
On the second decorative Christmas sock, place a small wad of fiberfill in the very toe and wrap a rubber band right under this wad. This makes a little pom-pom for the top of the hat. Tie off with a string. Go ahead and tie on a jingle bell or small sprig of holly onto the hat with the string.
Now, pull this second sock over the fiber filled section of the crew sock. If there is a heel on this sock, place it to the back of the gnome.
Pull the sock down just to the top of the gnome beard and nose. Use a line of hot glue to secure the sock in place so none of the crew sock shows, the nose is NOT covered and the top edge of the beard is covered.
Pull the back of the sock down the gnome back. Hot glue this in place as well.
Tah-dah! Way to Make a No Sew Sock Gnome for Christmas!
Tah-dah!!! You did it!! That didn’t take long and I promise that the second one you make will go even faster.
Ponder- Gnomes for other times of the year
Of course you have already thought of this I’m sure, but gnomes could be made out of different themed socks for any season or event of the year. They are addictive and are sure to bring a smile if given as a gift. This may make bring a new meaning to the term “stocking stuffer”!
