Happy May Day Coloring Page Free Printable
May 1st coming and that is May Day! And I’m not talking about sending a mayday help message! That's what my autocorrect kept trying to do, change May Day to mayday! Ha!
Some people don’t know much about May Day, but it is one of my favorite holidays. It brings up warm memories of childhood.
Childhood May Day memories
When I was a young girl, one of my favorite things to do was make May baskets and hang them on the doorknobs of my neighbors' doors.
That morning the paper, crayons, paper plates, glue, and other craft supplies would come out and the May basket craft time would begin!
I especially liked making the pincher baskets (aka- Cootie Catchers) and filling them with a little bit of candy and some of my mother’s spirea bush flowers.
If I made a larger basket, I could add a couple tulips and other flowers from the yard. An origami folded pincher basket was also called a cootie catcher back in the day.
It always depended on what was blooming then and what mom would allow to be cut.
Delivering the May baskets
It was so exciting to go up to the neighbor’s door, hang the basket on the doorknob, press the doorbell, and then run!
I’d run behind the side of the house or behind the bushes to hide while the person answered their door and found the basket.
They could probably see me easily, but I thought I was so sneaky. It was obvious by their response that the May basket brought them a lot of joy. But not as much joy as it brought to me!
Your free May Day coloring page!
This is a May Day coloring page and it is a free printable for you.
I hand drew this new coloring page and tried to capture the moment of hanging the basket on the doorknob before ringing the bell. The basket is full of happy flowers, but I can’t see the candy.
Print off a copy of the May Day coloring page for each of your kids or grandkids and of course one for yourself as well. Here is the link to the downloadable file: Happy May Day Coloring Page Free Printable.
It would be good to print it out on white card stock if you are using marker so it doesn’t soak through the paper.
Feel free to use it for your personal use and tell your friends about it so that they can print them out for themselves as well. This free printable coloring sheets is good for all ages and skill levels!
I’m working to get a hand drawn coloring page for more holidays so you will see one for Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day in the next few months. You recently got the April Fool’s Day one. They are so much fun to draw!
Coloring your May Day coloring page
I have grown to love my Prismacolor coloring pencils more and more as I use them. They draw in such bold colors and last a long time if cared for well.
You can get some Prismacolor pencils for yourself or use Colored pencils, crayons, gel pens, or colored markers to color your coloring page.
Kids of all ages (including you) will enjoy using their favorite colors to color in these beautiful flowers.
Coloring is always a great way to relax and visit together as well as develop fine motor skills.

May flowers for May baskets
They say that April showers bring May flowers but where I live that depends on warmer weather, amount of rainfall, and the wind too! The month of May can be hard on flowers here.
Note: Always ask before clipping flowers from the yard. I learned that the hard way when I picked all the neighbors flowers...to give to her! She was so kind about it.
Making flowers to use
There are some ways to make your own flowers if nature isn't cooperating. Make these fun kid's crafts to take the place of fresh flowers...
- Tissue paper flowers in a small size- only make the tissue paper about four inches with and about eight inches long before accordion folding it. We used to make ours from Kleenex!
- Book page roses- adjust the size of the paper square you use to make book page roses. The 4.5 inch square made about 3 inch roses.
Who do I give my May basket to?
Make several May baskets and then ponder who would enjoy receiving one. Perhaps you have a neighbor that is older or is a shut in. What a special holiday this will be if you place a basket on their doorknob or porch.
Our elderly pastor and his wife lived close by when I was young. One of my May baskets always landed on their porch.
Include May Day notes wishing them a Happy May Day.
Or better yet, get "caught" delivering the basket and end up spending time together. This is a fun way to deepen relationships and encourage neighbors.
Young children should be accompanied by an adult of course and the neighbors will love seeing you both for a short visit.
When I got a bit older I enjoyed receiving a few May baskets from friends at school and even a "beau" or two! So fun.
