Fingerprint Art

Fingerprints on the Glass

Little fingerprints on the glass patio door are a reminder that the grands were here. I have to admit that those little fingerprints warm my heart and I often leave them there for some time before cleaning them off.

How about making a fingerprint art project from those little fingerprints?

This was an impromptu, easy art project that was so much fun!

First, squirt a bit of paint out on a paper plate. (You may choose to use an ink pad instead.) I have a lot of acrylic paint available so use it whenever possible.

We dipped our thumb and finger tips into the paint.

Have some fun and make a series of prints on a blank piece of paper. Make a single print. Stack two prints on top of one another or place two prints side by side. Connect a series of prints. Go for it!

Give them a little bit of time to dry.

Prints to Fingerprint Art!

Now, let your imaginations go to work. What can you and your grands make from your prints? Add little lines and squiggles to the prints to bring your ideas to life!

Little legs, eyes, ears, hats, smiles, wings, and hair can make an infinite number of little creatures and forms. We just had a blast. I know you will too.

Soon the paper was brimming with bugs, animals, flowers, fish, birds, and people!

Put your finger (print) on the options! (Very punny 🙂

There are so many other possibilities that I’ve thought of since then.

  • How about cutting out a card or postcard and decorating the front?
  • Draw a shape on the paper with a pencil (like a heart, Christmas tree or flower) and fill in the shape with fingerprints.
  • Use a variety of paint colors or ink pad colors.
  • Use fingerprints for snow, rain, or tree leaves in your drawing or painting.

Be sure to post some pictures of your creations! I love it when you share your ideas.

Supplies:

  • Acrylic art paints in colors of your choice OR- ink pad
  • Black marker (permanent is best if child is old enough to handle that!)
  • Colored markers if desired
  • Paper

Enjoy!
