Saving the Day/Meal
What does a person turn to when it’s 5 minutes to meal time, there are hungry grands around and there’s no meat thawed? Why, a grilled cheese sandwich, of course! There’s nothing easier, more cost effective, or satisfying. The grands will love to help and will never starve when they leave home someday.
Grilled cheese or grilled PB&J sandwiches. Yum!

Making a Grilled Cheese Sandwich Masterpiece
Slice up the cheese and place it between two slices of bread. I love Velveeta cheese, cheddar cheese or Monterey jack cheese. Say, did you know that Velveeta cheese comes in packaged slices now? Finding that was a game changer for me! Don’t forget the many types of bread that can be used as well.
Golden Brown and Delicious
Melt a tablespoon of butter in a frying pan that is heated to medium heat. Place the sandwich in the pan until golden brown.
Pick the sandwich up with a spatula, place more butter in the pan until melted, flip the sandwich over and place it in the pan. Cook it until golden brown on the second side.
Extra Yumminess (is that a word?)
Papa likes his with the addition of thinly sliced summer sausage. There are so many fun options. I found a garlic flavored butter recently and we have loved using that in place of the butter when we brown one side of our grilled cheese sandwich.

Grilled PB&J- that's Peanut Butter & Jelly for non-acronym people
Feeling just a little bit brave? How about a grilled PB&J sandwich? Hey, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!
I had one kiddo that didn’t like cheese- did you hear me? Didn’t like cheese? (still doesn’t!)
What’s a mom to do when macaroni and cheese is off the menu and the ever popular grilled cheese isn’t an option?
I know I’m not the first to discover grilled PB&J, but I hadn’t ever heard of anyone that had tried it all those years ago. One day I was making the PB&J for my non-cheese kiddo while grilling cheese sandwiches for the others. On a whim I just popped it into the frying pan with the others. It was a HIT and the others wanted to try it as well. It's a hit with the grands as well.
Come on, give it a try.
Gluten Free Grilled Sandwiches
If you are serving someone that is eating gluten free, you can always use gluten free bread to make your sandwich. Be careful to keep your prep area and utensils gluten free. It would be a good idea to make that sandwich first to prevent cross-contamination.
Peanut Free Nut Butter Grilled Sandwiches
The grilled PB&J can be made with an alternative nut butter to avoid peanuts and the possibility of peanut allergies. Try almond or sunflower seed butter. They are a nice change even if there isn’t a peanut allergy.
Funny Grilled Cheese Sandwich Story
So here’s a funny grilled cheese sandwich story just for you. I have a friend that made grilled cheese sandwiches often for her kids. When her daughter ate a grilled cheese sandwich at a friend’s house she exclaimed, “This isn’t grilled cheese, it isn’t black on one side”! Busted!! Ha!
Tip: Keep watch on your sandwiches- golden brown is the goal! 😉
ENJOY!
