Cute Craft Alert: a Christmas Tree Coloring Page
One of our favorite Christmas traditions is to go out in the pasture or creek area and cut down a cedar tree for our Christmas tree. We all dress according to the weather and then pile in our pick-up truck. (Almost) everyone loves it!
Papa spends several months scouting what trees are possibilities. He takes us for a tour, and we look them all over. After a group discussion we choose our favorite. Then we take turns with the saw and cut it down.
These trees are usually planted by birds and are ones that are in the wrong spots for grazing the pasture. So it’s a wonderful thing to use them to grace our home as a Christmas tree!
Our cedar Christmas tree inspired this coloring sheet that I hand drew especially for you. I tried to imagine what a cedar tree in the pasture might look like if the birds could do the decorating!
The bunny watches the birds bring the ribbons and the ornaments and wrap the tree up! Mr. Snowman is tucked in between the trees to tell the birds how to move the ornaments around so there’s not too many in one spot! :-).

Craft Tips
Here are a few tips for you as you enjoy this Xmas Tree & Snowman Coloring Page:
- Colored pencils- The Prismacolor colored pencils are my favorite. They sharpen well and draw with such rich and smooth color. Of course, any colored pencils work so use what you have!
- Cardstock paper- Printing on white cardstock paper makes the coloring sheet sturdy. It’s less likely to tear or let markers soak through onto the table.
Craft Variations
Want to switch things up? Here are a few ways you can customize and play with this craft.
- Art museum- Let every person color their coloring page and then hang them up on a wall. Use painter’s tape to put them directly on the wall or use clothespins to hang them on a string. Or put them up on the refrigerator, that's always a perfect place for an art museum!
- Christmas letter- Let your guests each write a note on the back of your finished coloring page. Then send the signed coloring page to a friend or relative that couldn’t attend your gathering.
FAQ
I recommend white cardstock paper. This is thicker and takes markers well. It doesn't tear as easily either.

The REST of the Story Behind the Christmas Tree Coloring Pages
It's tradition!
We love the tradition of cutting a cedar tree, and we do it on the weekend of Thanksgiving. A couple of the guys have to manhandle the tree to get it put up so we can put decorations on it. But they are willing so far.
Absolutely every year we stand the tree up and it touches the 12-foot ceiling in our living room. And every year we say the same thing- “It didn’t look this big outside!”
I’ve been scolding everyone every year for getting a tree that’s too big.
Hurry, here comes the snow!
Well last year we were expecting a major snowstorm on Thanksgiving weekend so Papa and I cut down the tree early so it would be dry to decorate.
As soon as the tree fell over and we went to pick it up to put it on the truck bed, I knew it was bigger than we thought.
When the tree was carried in and set up it just touched the ceiling!
And guess what I said? “It didn’t look that big outside!” The jokes on me.
Inspiration for this hand drawn Christmas tree coloring page
So our cedar Christmas tree inspired this coloring sheet that I hand drew especially for you.
The Saturday that we decorated the Christmas tree last year, the predicted snowstorm moved in, and it snowed about 8 inches!
Playing in the snow
We don’t get large snows like that very often, especially when the kids and grandkids are here. No one had snow clothes along so we went to the basement and searched for all the extra ski wear and work coveralls we could find! We looked a site, but we were warm.
Papa pulled our toboggan sled with the four-wheeler, and we all enjoyed the snow as well as decorated the tree.
Early morning joy, the Christmas lights on the tree
I think one of my favorite things is to get up early in the morning and turn the lights of the Christmas tree on. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I have my hot tea or eat breakfast by those Christmas lights and just savor the moment.
What if???
So I’m trying to imagine what a cedar tree in the pasture might look like if the birds could do the decorating like they’re doing in this coloring sheet! The bunny watches as the birds bring the ribbons and the ornaments and wrap the tree up!
That 8-inch snow gave lots of opportunity to build a huge snowman. So Mr. Snowman is tucked in between the trees to tell the birds how to move the ornaments around so there’s not too many in one spot! :-).
Decorating the tree
I always have to chuckle about how many ornaments are all in one spot on our tree when the grandkids help us decorate. Most of the decorations are about their eye level all the way around the tree.
I just leave it that way because it makes me think of them, but it’s tempting to move some of them around. And I am known to do that occasionally.
Caring for the tree and little surprises...
Papa oversees watering the tree and the cedar tree drinks up gallons of water at first. With that much water it greens up when it is inside. It’s amazing actually.
Last year when we took the tree out, I found that there was a bird’s nest tucked in the center by the trunk. There had been baby birds in that nest the summer before.
Grateful...
There are many, many more cedar trees growing out in the pasture that must be cleared occasionally for the cattle to graze. So I’m always grateful that one of them makes its way into our living room each year.
I’m sure hoping that you enjoy this Christmas tree coloring sheet. Because I certainly enjoyed drawing it for you.
