Art for Kids: Free Printable Labor Day Coloring Page
When I was young, Labor Day was just a day that we didn't go to school. I thought it was odd that we didn’t “labor” on a day called “Labor Day”!
When I became a home ec teacher and married a farmer/rancher, I saw the value of hard work.
Then I began to appreciate that Labor Day was a holiday to celebrate the contributions of workers. Those hardworking individuals that make all of the businesses and systems work well. Labor Day was to honor all of those that work, including all of us. What a great idea.
This coloring sheet features a tool belt with tools and a jeans pocket with a bandana which are fun to color. And they remind us of those that work with tools of all sorts in businesses all around us each day. Thank you!
The history of Labor Day
Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. It’s a federal (U.S.) holiday and is to recognize worker’s contributions to society.
The industrial revolution in the 1800s brought about a migration of workers into the cities. This also brought about needs for housing, good working conditions, safety, and respect.
The idea of having a day to celebrate these worker began in a few cities and spread in the late 1800's. In 1894 Congress passed an act making Labor Day a national holiday.
I’m told that some towns have community events like Labor Day parades and such. But most people I know just enjoy celebrating the end of summer with an extra day off before the school schedule begins. They have picnics, do yard work, go to the lake, or just hang out and relax. What fun Labor Day activities!

Supplies for the Labor Day Coloring Page
You don’t need much to bring this cute coloring page to life!
- Colored pencils: Prismacolor Colored Pencils are my favorites as they have vibrant colors that go onto the paper smoothly. It is possible to layer them up and mix the colors to create new colors. You will love using them. Any colored pencils will be fun to use. They are what my grandkids prefer most of the time so I keep a plastic shoe box full of them to use.
- Markers: The colors of markers are so vibrant and beautiful. My only complaint is that they can bleed through a paper. My recommendation is to print off the coloring sheet on cardstock weight paper to help with that issue.
- Crayons: Who doesn't love crayons? Crayons are a wonderful option for younger children in particular. They help to build fine motor skills and there is less worry about staining clothing.
- Cardstock paper: It works well to copy the Labor Day Coloring Page on cardstock paper. It is a heavier paper so it doesn't rip easily and is a smooth surface. But it also lessons the possibility of markers bleeding through.
Equipment
- Pencil sharpener that’s portable: I keep several of these inexpensive, portable pencil sharpeners available around the house and in my art supplies. The grandkids use them all the time when they are here so there is one in my plastic shoe box of colored pencils.
- Pencil sharpener for the home: If you have a need for pencil sharpening for more art projects, a good pencil sharpener is a must.

Craft Tips
- Cardstock paper: Print on cardstock paper with a smooth surface. Less likely to rip or have markers bleed through.
- Coloring surface: Grab a clip board, portable lap board, or smooth book to use as a smooth surface to color on. There’s nothing more frustrating than having a pencil rip the coloring sheet because of an uneven coloring surface!
- Pencil sharpener: When using colored pencils on a coloring sheet have a pencil sharpener close by. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just a small portable one will do.
Craft Variations
Want to switch things up? Here are a few ways you can customize and play with this craft.
- Colored paper: Print your coloring sheet off on colored paper. It will change the hue of the colors you use but then you don’t need to color the whole background. I find that light pastel colors work best for this, blue, yellow, pink, green.
- Road trip activity: Take your coloring sheets along on a trip and pull them out in the car or on location. This is nice for a bit of down time.
- Go outside to color: Coloring is a great activity out on the porch or on a picnic table (if it isn't too windy or raining of course).
- Lesson plan for educators: This free printable Labor Day coloring page would be a perfect resource to use in lesson plans in a unit for Labor Day or career day for young learners. You could teach about various professions such as police officers, fire fighters, and construction workers. Then have a coloring sheet on hand as part of your creative activities or independent work.
