After teaching students how to make these Baking Powder Biscuits and Gravy hundreds of times in my Home Economics classes, you can bet this kid-tested recipe is the best! Not only are the biscuits and gravy easy for kids to help make, they turn out tender and tasty every single time.
In each of my Home Ec classes, my students thought this recipe would be too hard for them to make. But without fail, this turned out to be one of their favorites from the whole class! Why? Because they found out it was so easy with step-by-step help. I loved watching them gain cooking confidence while making something special - a delicious, tried and true homemade breakfast that the whole family will love.
Baking Powder Biscuits Recipe Ingredients
-
2 cups flour
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
4 teaspoon of baking powder
-
6 Tablespoons shortening
-
½ to ⅔ cup milk
How to Make The Best Baking Powder Biscuits
Step 1: Mixing The Dough
This is easy peasy, any age kids will enjoy helping.
Mix the three dry ingredients together. Then cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or knives until crumbly.
Add about ½ of the milk and stir. Slowly add the remaining milk, a little bit at a time until the dough is soft but not sticky when mixed. You may not use all the milk.
Step 2: Cut Out Your Baking Powder Biscuits
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll or pat out to ½ inch thick. (I don't knead my dough, I find it gets too tough.) I usually have to keep the kids from rolling the dough out too thin because it's so fun to use the rolling pin.
Use a round biscuit cutter to cut nice, well, round biscuits! Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Repeat this with the extra dough and then make a little blob biscuit out of the last bit of dough. I'm so technical here, aren't I? Put the biscuits in the oven to bake. It takes about 15 minutes and the biscuits will be golden brown when done.
Tip: When I'm in a hurry I put the dough directly onto the ungreased cookie sheet. I pat it out into a square that is ½ inch thick and cut into squares. Boom. Done. It cuts the prep time down significantly.
Step 3: Baking the Biscuits
Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 450 degrees until lightly browned, about 15 minutes.
Makes 18-20 biscuits that are 1 ¾ inch in diameter.
My Favorite Gravy to Pair With This Recipe For Baking Powder Biscuits
Gravy looks like it is so hard to make. Not so. Making gravy is a great skill for every child to learn. While the biscuits are baking go ahead and make the gravy.
Baking Powder Biscuits Recipe Tips
-
Faster biscuits: When I'm in a hurry I put the dough directly onto the ungreased cookie sheet. I pat it out into a square that is ½ inch thick and cut it into squares. Boom. Done. It cuts the prep time down significantly.
-
Gravy types: You can substitute other types of meat, such as bacon, if preferred. You can also use 4 Tablespoons of butter alone if you don't want to use meat in the gravy.
-
Gravy thickness: When making a gravy or sauce that is a medium consistency, the recipe ratio is a roux of 2 Tablespoons fat and 2 Tablespoons flour to thicken 1 cup of milk. You can make the gravy thicker or thinner by increasing or decreasing the amount of fat and flour that you use to the 1 cup of milk.
You Can Make a Roux Too!
I make the gravy in the same skillet as I browned the sausage, but you can use a medium saucepan if you prefer. Add the flour to the grease and stir with a whisk. It will make a thick consistency called a roux (pronounced roo, which rhymes with boo). This is a great Scrabble word to know to use up that "x" tile! You're welcome.
Add the milk. This always looks like it won't work, but encourage the kids to gently whisk until the roux dissolves into the milk. Emphasize gently so you don't have milk down in your burners or all over your stove. As the gravy slowly heats it will thicken.
Sausage Gravy, Yum
Add ½ of the meat back into the gravy (use the other half on pizza or in eggs). If the gravy gets too thick as you wait for the biscuits to come out of the oven, just stir in a bit more milk before serving.
Salt and pepper to taste.
Note: It is possible to make the roux with the meat and the fat all together if you want. But, that takes a bit of skill to decide if there is enough fat, the full 4 Tablespoons. Perhaps that can be saved for the second time you make gravy together!
Tip: When making a gravy or sauce that is a medium consistency, the recipe ratio is a roux of 2 Tablespoons fat and 2 Tablespoons flour to thicken 1 cup of milk. You can make the gravy thicker or thinner by increasing or decreasing the amount of fat and flour that you use to the 1 cup of milk.
Let the kids serve a plate of yummy baking powder biscuits and gravy for their dad. Papa is glad to taste test this one for you for supper! It gets a thumbs up.
Serving and Pairing suggestions:
Serve the biscuits in a basket or in a bowl hot from the oven if possible. Follow this with a bowl of hot gravy or butter and jelly.
A plate of homemade baking powder biscuits topped with creamy sausage gravy is amazing in and of itself. But it’s fun to pair it with a few easy sides to round out a full breakfast spread- especially if you’re making it for a Father’s Day celebration! These ideas are simple enough for kids to help prepare and will add variety and color to your breakfast table:
-
Scrambled or fried eggs – A classic, high protein side that’s easy to whip up.
-
Fresh fruit or a fruit salad – A fruit salad adds color and is refreshing.
-
A glass of orange juice or milk – A cool drink will balance the warmth of the gravy.
-
Crispy bacon or breakfast sausage links – Because it’s a celebration of course!
-
Cheesy hash brown casserole – A hearty make-ahead option.
-
Coffee or hot cocoa – Something warm to sip while you chat around the table.
-
Jam or honey – For biscuits that escape the gravy and need a sweet topping.
Whatever you add, keep it fun and family-friendly—and let little hands help where they can! After all, it’s not just about the food—it’s about making memories together.
How to Store Leftover Baking Powder Biscuits
If you have a few biscuits that are left over be sure to store them properly so you can have homemade goodness a second time. Let the biscuits cool completely before putting them in an airtight container or resealable bag. You can store them at room temperature for up to 2 days, but for best freshness, pop them in the fridge and enjoy within 4 to 5 days. To reheat the first option is to wrap the biscuits in foil and warm them in a 300°F oven for about 10 minutes. The second option is to microwave them for 15–20 seconds with a slightly damp paper towel to keep them soft. For longer storage, biscuits freeze well. Just store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. A warm biscuit with a little butter or jam makes a cozy snack or quick breakfast all over again!
