Published: Jun 26, 2025 by Shelly · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Kids can use a toilet paper tube to make a firecracker in this Easy 4th of July Craft. Fill it full of your favorite candies as a treat box and use it as table favors or gifts. They would look cute on a wreath or garland as well.

Cute Craft Alert: 4th of July TP Tube Firecrackers!

I decorated my party table in minutes with this Easy 4th of July Craft. Make them with materials you probably have on hand and use them in multiple ways.

I filled mine with candy but was thinking it would work great to add small treats as well. I was surprised at how much candy fits into a TP tube!

The firecracker treat boxes can sit up on the table or lay on the plate. Go ahead and attach the firecracker to a ribbon to make a garland, or add it to the decorations on a wreath. So versatile- and I love recycling.

Sparkly pipe cleaners, red white and blue patterned scrapbook paper, red and blue washi tape, toilet paper rolls, scissors, glue and mints to put in the treat boxes.

Supplies

You don’t need many supplies to bring this easy DIY firecracker craft to life!

  • Toilet Paper Tubes- Save your toilet paper tubes and recycle them in this toilet paper tube craft.
  • Scrapbook Paper- Cover the tube with scrapbook paper. Red white and blue paper designs look great for Independence Day!
  • Scissors- Of course you’ll need your craft scissors.
  • Clear tape- Use invisible tape to hold the paper on the TP tube.
  • Glue- Tacky craft glue and a hot glue gun and hot glue are good choices for glue.
  • Pipe cleaners- Use pipe cleaners in the top of the firecracker craft.
  • Decorations- Decorate the firecracker with paper, buttons, jewels, or pompoms.
  • Candy- Choose candy to fill the TP tubes. It needs to be small in size.

Steps to Make a Treat Box for the 4th of July

Measure and cut

Measure your toilet paper tube length and add four inches and use this measurement for your paper length.

Cut your scrapbook paper into a rectangle that’s the paper length you just figured and is 6 inches wide.

Draw around the end of the TP tube onto the paper and cut out the circle. Set this aside.

Form the paper

Position your paper so that it is one inch from the bottom of the paper and 3 inches from the top. The 6 inches is the width.

Roll the rectangle paper around the toilet paper tube and tape it (or glue it) in place.

Cut slits into the one inch end of the paper that are about ½ to ¾ inch. Cut them from the edge of the paper to the edge of the TP tube inside the paper.

Push these slits inward to cover the end of the TP tube.

Glue and fill

Glue the circle paper over the top of these slits. I used a hot glue gun and hot glue for this step.

Cut narrow slits in the scrapbook paper on the 3 inch end of the treat box. The slits will be about ⅛th inch wide. Cut them from the edge of the paper down to the edge of the TP tube inside.

Put the candy down inside the toilet paper tube.

Seal and decorate!

Bend a pipe cleaner in half and wrap each of the ends around your finger to give it a twirl shape. Put the folded end down into the top of the TP tube. I put two pipe cleaners into mine.

Pull the fringe up into a “pony tail”, catching the two pipe cleaners in with the fringe.

Wrap another pipe cleaner around the fringe pony tail to keep it in shape. Add a drop of hot glue to keep this in place.

Decorate the outside of the firecracker however you want to. I added strips of paper or stripes of washi tape around mine. Then added a star cut out. Have fun!

Craft Tips

These tips can help make this treat box idea even easier!

  • Hot glue- Hot glue works well for gluing the circle onto the end of the TP tube.
  • Pipe cleaners- Twirl the pipe cleaners around a pencil for a tighter twirl shape.
  • Stand up- The Easy 4th of July Craft Firecracker Treat Box will sit upright on the table or lay in a bowl. They are showy!

Craft Variations

Here are a few variations you’re welcome to try with this 4th of July Craft:

  • Paper- Gift wrapping paper or colored copy paper can work to cover the TP tubes.
  • Ribbon- A ribbon can tie off the top of the firecracker instead of a pipe cleaner.
  • Treats- You can also use small treats like money, a pack of gum or a keychain in the toilet paper tube.
  • Garland or wreath- Leave the candy out and attach the firecracker to a ribbon for a garland or onto a wreath for the front door!
