Yarn Laser Maze
Bad weather days won’t stop the fun of setting up a DIY Yarn Laser Maze Indoors!
It only takes a few minutes to set up an indoor obstacle course that will bring out the spy in every player.
Give it a go for rounds of fun for young and…ol…well…the ole adventurous ones among you!
DIY laser obstacle course
I’ve never actually played laser tag before, have you?
But I have watched my fair share of movies where characters navigate through a laser maze in order to nab their prize or escape their dire situation.
Remember the challenging and nerve-wracking scenes from Get Smart, Oceans Twelve, or Entrapment? They are always thrilling and stir up the question, “could I do that?”
Well, now you can! Ha!
Hallway laser maze
All you need is a ball of yarn, and some painters tape to set up a laser maze in your hallway.
Easy peasy!
A hallway works so well but you could set this up in a room (or series of rooms) or outside on a nice day. You need lots of places to attach the yarn so the course is interesting and challenging so keep that in mind when choosing your location.
We will set ours up in a hallway.
You can set up the yarn laser maze yourself or hand the materials to your kids and let them set it up as part of the fun if you want.
How do you make a yarn laser maze?
Use the painter’s tape to tape the end of the yarn to the wall or a door frame at one end of the hallway. You can tie a knot in the end of the yarn, so it doesn’t get pulled out of the tape easily.
Note: It would work to use Command Hooks instead of tape to attach the tape to the wall. They are amazing but much more expensive. String would also work in place of the yarn.
I double taped each place where the yarn was attached to the walls which was helpful in keeping the yarn in place.
Stretch the yarn back and forth from wall to wall all the way down the hallway.
Leave just a bit of give in the yarn so that if it gets touched by a player it doesn’t get pulled down immediately. But not so much give that is sags.
The key to making this activity challenging is to make various angles with the yarn as it goes from wall to wall. The angles should intersect (high and low) and prevent a player from just getting on their tummy and sliding underneath the whole way down the hallway.
I guess this is a practical way to use what you learned in your geometry class! Ha!
Make the course easier for younger children and more difficult for older kids or adults.
Creative ways to use the yarn laser maze...
This could work well into a treasure hunt or escape room challenge for a birthday party or team building activity.
Another great thing to point out is that this is so easy to clean up, takes a couple minutes. And if using painter’s tape there is no damage to the walls or doors.

So, “Get Smart” and give it a try! Let me know how it goes.
Note: Papa wouldn’t go through my maze. He broke some ribs a few weeks ago so I didn’t encourage him too strongly!
