"What's for breakfast, Nana?"
I love it when little bedhead grandkids come into the kitchen when staying the night. After a hug they usually climb up on the stool by the island and within a couple minutes I hear, “Nana, I’m hungry. What’s for breakfast?”
Wow, sure sounds like my kids a few years ago, “What’s for breakfast, Mom? I’m hungry!”
A sure breakfast favorite for every generation is Saturday morning french toast. They love it and so do I because it’s so easy, they can help and it uses up that bread I’ve tucked away in the freezer because it’s gotten a bit too dried out!
Making Saturday Morning French Toast
So, I have to admit this is a “dump” recipe. This ingredient list is close to what we whisk together in the bowl so don’t sweat it if you are one egg short or forget the vanilla!
This is a great way to use bread that is a bit dry. In fact it works better that way then with very fresh bread because the bread holds together better. Experiment with different kinds of bread just for fun.
Dip and Fry
I use a round cake pan for dipping the bread in the batter. It’s a great size.
I can fit four pieces of bread in my larger skillet but growing up my mom would use a flat griddle and fry 6 pieces at a time. She would say, “If I had a nickle for every piece of french toast I’d made, I would be a rich woman!” I guess I would be rich too!
Serve them up!
Butter and syrup is all you need to serve Saturday morning french toast, but even sprinkling a bit of powdered sugar on them before serving makes them look special. The other toppings are a bonus!
Consider making your own syrup. A recipe for that is coming soon!
And by the way, with family and friends I AM a rich woman.
So are you. Enjoy!
