Want some easy-to-make Valentine's Day Bags?
I’m loving these super simple Stamped Valentine’s Day Treat Bags! Kids can make these in minutes to give as Valentine’s at school (or for Nana). Slip in some candy or other goodies and write on names. Easy, quick, and oh so cute!
The secret to these beauties is potato stamping and cookie cutter stamping. Hopefully you have a potato, Heart Shaped Cookie Cutters, Brown Paper Lunch Bags and some craft paint. If so, you are in business. Even the littles can do this craft on their own.
Tip: Don’t forget to put on an old t-shirt or Apron on the kids and cover your table with newspaper. You’ll be glad you did!

How to cut a potato stamp
Making a potato stamp is easy. Cut a medium to large potato in half in the direction that creates as much flat surface area as possible. Press a Heart Shaped Cookie Cutters into the flat surface of the cut potato. While the cookie cutter is there, use a Paring Knife to cut around the outside of the shape, cutting some of the potato away and removing it. (See the video if this is confusing.) Then take the cookie cutter out of the potato. This leaves just the flat surface of the shape you will stamp onto the paper.
Note: If you are up for a challenge, you can free hand cut a design into the potato and cut away the extra potato from outside of this design. You can also cut holes into the design to create a pattern on the stamped shape. There are a lot of possibilities.
Dry the surface of the potato stamp off with a paper towel.
Stamping on the paper bag
Squirt some Craft Paints onto a foam plate and spread it out a bit so it works to dip the stamps into it more easily. I used red, pink, and white craft paint. Pretty traditional for Valentine’s Day!
Dip the potato into the Craft Paints color of choice and then stamp on the Brown Paper Lunch Bags. Be sure to get the entire surface of the stamp flat onto the bag so it makes a full heart shaped stamp. You will need to clean off the potato if you want to change paint colors unless you don’t mind a mottled look.
Tip: If the littles can’t hold the potato stamp very well, stick a fork into the potato top and they can use the fork handle to hold onto while they stamp.
Use Heart Shaped Cookie Cutters to dip into another color of paint and stamp onto the bag. I used the larger size heart for the pink paint and the smaller heart for the white paint. Don’t be afraid to overlap the hearts.
If you like the spattered look, use an old toothbrush and dip it in the paint (I used white). Use your thumb to run over the toothbrush bristles to “flick” paint on the bag. This is a great technique for many craft projects and can be used when doing watercolor as well.
After the paint is dry, write a message on your Stamped Valentine's Day Treat Bags with a Black Permanent Marker. “I love you!”, “BFF!”, “You are a great friend!”, or just “Happy Valentine’s Day!” are all great options.
Valentine Candy Bags need....candy!
Place Candy, small toys, a gift card, gum or whatever you would like in the bag.
Fold over the top and either Stapler it shut or make two holes with a Hole Punch and tie a cord or Ribbon through the holes. I used a strip of pink fabric to tie the bag shut that I made for Papa!
Please let me see what you and your grands come up with, kids are so creative.
Potato Stamp Art (or other food art!)
I love potato stamping. I’m not trying to waste food, but it is an inexpensive way to create stamps of various shapes. I love the kind of primitive look the stamp makes.
I hope to do more stamping in the future and have a number of project ideas in mind. I’m always open to your ideas as well.
