Happy birthday to Nana!
Last week was my birthday so I like having a birthday theme idea in August as part of my celebration. No, I didn’t celebrate with unicorns, but I should have!!
Unicorn Party Invitation
If you would like to hand out invitations here is an easy idea to make yourself with minimal effort.
Free Simple Unicorn Birthday Party Invitation Pattern for you!
Print the Simple Unicorn Birthday Party Invitation Pattern by clicking on this link or make patterns yourself with these simple directions.
Use the printed pattern (or a cup) to make circles from white card stock or construction paper (two per invitation).
Glue a printed copy or write your party information on one of the two circles and set it aside.
Create the unicorn features
Cut an oval from pink paper that will fit on the bottom of the second circle as a muzzle/nose for the unicorn. Draw two dots/lines on the nose for nostrils and add a smile if you want. Glue this to the bottom of the second white circle.
Draw large circles with black dots inside for eyes and/or glue on googly eyes. Of course, I had to draw eyelashes!
Cut two triangles of the white paper for two ears and glue to the back of the circle so they stick out like ears when seen from the front.
Mane and horn...
Cut a rectangle from blue paper (or other colored paper). Cut into it (but not all the way through) to make fringe. Glue this behind the ears and make the fringe bend over the front of the circle like mane.
Cut a longer triangle from gold paper to be the unicorn horn (I used pink paper). Glue this behind the fringe so it sticks up for the horn.
Glue the first white circle with the party info onto the back of the decorated circle.
SO easy and fast. Aren’t they cute?
Note: This same idea can also be made in a larger form for a unicorn craft for the event and in an even larger form for a pin the horn on a unicorn game. Let's look at those options next.
Unicorn Party Craft Ideas
Unicorn Headbands
Start your craft time by having each child make their own unicorn headband! My grands loved these and kept them on the rest of the day.
Cut 1 ½ or 2 inch strips of card stock or construction paper in the child’s color of choice. Cut a long triangular horn from paper.
Tape or staple the strips together so that they form a ring and fit the size of the child’s head. Then tape the horn inside the ring.
You could have the pieces cut out ahead of time if you want and just assemble for each child.
These really help set the theme of the party as soon as the kids put them on. Fun!
Unicorn Paper Plate Craft
The second craft is a unicorn made from a white paper plate and it is made exactly like the invitation except larger.
It will be easiest and fastest if you have the paper pieces cut out ahead of time for the children to assemble. But you can also draw them on paper and have the pieces set on top of each plate ready for the children to cut out if you would like.
Enlarge the Unicorn pattern (here is the link to the pattern) or draw your own pieces on paper in a larger size that is in proportion to the size of the paper plate.
Assemble the paper plate craft
Assemble the unicorn craft in the exact same way as the invitation. It works well to staple the ears, mane, and horn on the top of the plate if you don’t want to try glue sticks or glue. Use the larger googly eyes or just draw the eyes on the unicorn.
Tip: It would be helpful to have several staplers available for kids to share if you go that direction.
Write the name on the back of each craft unicorn.
It would be cute to use clothes pins to hang up the unicorns across a piece of ribbon or twine as part of your decorations, perhaps behind the treats table.

Game- Pin the Horn on the Unicorn
Note: One of my grands wanted to draw a unicorn horse for this game. That worked great!! We made the horns smaller to be in scale with the drawing. You can choose to do this too if you want! If not, follow the easy directions below.
You guessed it. You will make a Pin the Horn on the Unicorn Game the same way that you made the invitations! There are directions to make your own game found at this link from a post that is specifically about the Pin the Tail game.
Basically, use a large piece of paper or poster board and draw a large circle for the head, draw and color the oval nose (add nostrils, smile and eyes), draw triangle ears, fringy mane, and a large horn on top the head.
Cut out long triangle colored paper pieces to be horns for the kids to “pin” on the unicorn, one per child.
The object of the game is to get the horn as close to the drawn unicorn horn as possible all while being blindfolded! You know the routine! Again the specific directions are found at this link.
Tip: Be sure to write each child’s name on the horn they “pin” so you remember which horn belongs to which child!
It's always fun to have a prize for the winner. And this makes for a cute part of the party decorations!
Unicorn Birthday Decorations
To keep the party simple, use the unicorn paper plate craft and the pin the tail on the unicorn game as your decorations as mentioned above. Hanging the unicorn paper plates on a ribbon or twine with clothes pins over the treats table would be really festive looking.
A colored table cloth, plates, napkins, and cups will keep the theme going.
If you would like more decorations there are many choices to purchase. There are a few links below if you want that option.
Unicorn Cupcakes or Cake
Make or purchase cupcakes with frosting (color doesn’t matter but it needs to be a soft frosting, so the sprinkles stick).
When it is treat time, allow each child to add colored sprinkles to the top of his or her cupcake before eating. Be sure to do this over their plate or over a cookie sheet with sides because sprinkles go everywhere! This was a big hit!!
Note: the kids can add their own frosting and then the sprinkles if that helps keep the frosting soft, so the sprinkles stick. Frosting can be purchased or home made.
Here is a cake that my friend made herself for her granddaughter. If you are ambitious, this is so cute to make or have made. It was awesome! But in my experience the kids loved decorating their own cupcakes even more and that is much simpler!!
