Mothers Day homemade gift
Need a quick project for the kids to make as a gift for Mom, Nana, teacher or neighbor? This is just the ticket. A Mothers Day DIY Recipe Card Holder is fast and fun to make and is a handmade Mother’s Day gift that will show her she is loved and appreciated.
My brother made this recipe card holder for me probably 20 years ago and I still use it for holding recipes! I think of him literally every time I pull it off my shelf and shuffle through the cards it holds to find that favorite recipe. Love you brother.

How do I make a DIY Recipe Card Holder?
We have a little stash of scrap lumber in the shed that is perfect for this kind of project. A short piece of a 2x4 works perfectly. If you don't have any scraps than perhaps a friend might have some you can have.
Saw away!!
Draw a mark 3 ½ inches up the side on one end of the squared off lumber. Then draw a mark 1 ¼ inches up the other side of the lumber. Draw a line between these two marks. This will create a diagonal line that will be the guide for sawing off the board.
Cut the wood along the line.
Use sandpaper to sand the board to get a fairly smooth surface on all sides of the block.
Paint the DIY Recipe Card Holder
Paint the block a solid color on all sides (paint several sides, let dry, then turn over and paint the other side). I used the acrylic craft paints that I have on hand. Let this dry.
Have fun painting decorations on the two main sides of the block. This can be a design, flowers, anything the child would like.
Use Polyurethane spray or liquid over the entire block to make it easy to clean and to protect the painting.
Glue on the clothes pin
Use wood glue (or hot glue) to glue the clothes pin onto the top diagonal edge of the block. The part of the pin that opens should be towards the highest point of the block surface. This is where the recipe card will be clamped.
This is such a cute gift for Mother’s Day. It preserves a bit of a child’s artwork that can be admired every time it is used. My grands made some on their last visit here, one for their mom and one for her good friend. They are wrapped and ready to give for Mother’s Day. They are so excited! So am I.
DIY Recipe Card Holder
A DIY Recipe Card Holder would also be a perfect project for Scouts, Art class, home school class, Vacation Bible School or Sunday school project. The brother that gave mine to me made them with students in an evening group he taught at his church. He’s such a sweetie!
