DIY Corsage for Mom

Published: May 3, 2018 · Modified: Sep 5, 2020 by Shelly · This post may contain affiliate links · 2 Comments

May and Mother's Day!

May is a wonderful month. One reason it's special is that it it holds Mother's Day!

Help your grands make a beautiful DIY Corsage for Mom to wear on her special day.

Corsage Colors

Decide what color corsage you would like to make and then gather your supplies (listed below).

Tip: Have a little color wheel lesson with the grands and choose flowers of all one color, two colors or three colors that work well together. If possible, let them help you choose the flowers at the craft store or from your stash of supplies.

Tip: Use a pop of color or unusual material to make the corsage interesting and unique. I.e.- add a pop of orange to a blue or purple or use a bit of lime green greenery/filler. For fun add something like a feather, jewel or bead stem (available in the bridal section of the craft store).

Tip: Buying the bush flowers gives a lot more stems of flowers so you can make several corsages (or a corsage and a flower crown if you would like).

Preparing the Stems

Clip 2 or 3 stems of each type of flower and greenery.

Tip- It is usually best to have an odd number of flowers (main flowers) in a corsage.

Fold a piece of the wire and hook it through one of the flower stems. Wrap the wire and stem tightly with floral tape, winding it around and around as you go down. Tear off the floral tape at the end. It is kind of sticky so it sticks together as you wind it.

Repeat this with each flower and piece of greenery.

Arrange the DIY Corsage for Mom

Arrange the flowers and greenery in your hand until you come up with an arrangement that you like. It looks best in kind of a teardrop shape. Lay this down and note how the stems are laying in position to one another.

Keeping the stems in the same position to one another, group the stems in twos and wrap tape around the stems to hold them together.

Then wrap two of these groups of stems together in position to one another to make the corsage shape you desire and wrap tape around the stems to hold them together.

Finish by grouping all of the stem groups together (which should be two or maybe three at this point). Position them as you want and then wrap tape around the stems to hold them all together.

Finishing Touches

Clip off the end of the wires to make kind of a stump at the end of the corsage and wrap this in tape to cover the cut ends.

A Bow of Course!

Make a bow from ribbon by wrapping 3 loops that are about 2 ½- 3 inches around. Bend a piece of the wire and wrap it tightly around the center of the looped ribbon. Fluff out the loops. Wrap the bow's wire around the bottom of the corsage and clip the wire, tucking the ends of the wire up and around so it they don't poke anyone!

Presenting the DIY Corsage for Mom

Mom is going to love the beautiful and personalized corsage the grands made for her.

It takes 2 corsage pins to pin this on mom. That's probably a job for Nana or for dad, not the grands! 🙂

Tip: you can purchase an adjustable wrist bracelet with a velcro closure in the bridal section of the craft store such as Hobby Lobby. These are easy to attach to the back of the corsage. Mom may prefer wearing the corsage on her wrist.

This works well with the DIY floral crown we made for Midsummers Day on an earlier post. Check out that post and make a floral crown for the grand daughters to match mom's corsage.

Supplies for the DIY Corsage for Mom

  • Silk Flowers (2-3 types)
  • Greenery (1 type other than what is on flowers)
  • Extra item of interest to put in corsage (i.e. feather, decorative stems)
  • Floral Wire (24 guage)
  • Floral Tape- green (or match to type of material)
  • Wire Cutters-
  • Ribbon-
  • Corsage Pins-
  • Wristlet (if you make this into a wrist corsage)

Enjoy!

Thank you for taking the time to explain how to make this corsage. It is very helpful as we are doing all the flowers for my daughter’s upcoming wedding in September. Could I ask, will this wire technique work with dahlias?

It should work with all flowers.
I will say that these were made with silk flowers though and that makes the stems sturdier and also they can be made ahead.
I hope the wedding is beautiful!!
