- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup white sugar
- ½ cup water
- Optional variations: 1 teaspoon vanilla and a pinch of salt 1 teaspoon maple extract
- Mix the first three ingredients together in a small saucepan. 
- Bring the mixture to a low simmer, stirring frequently to dissolve the sugar and keep it from burning. 
- Let simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened slightly, then remove the pan from the heat. 
- If you want to try one of the variations, stir them in now! 
- Let the syrup cool, then use it generously to decorate a giant stack of pancakes or french toast! 
- Keep the leftovers in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator.
